Romney's Speech

I'm curious what you all thought of Romney's speech last night. Hopefully you all got to see it. He addressed his religion and feelings on the matter. The speech was actually quite eloquent. I have to admit I was impressed with his abilities to speak on such a personal matter with such conviction. He looked teary throughout parts. I think I personally needed to see him speak like that. I haven't been too sure what I thought of him to be totally honest. Last night I couldn't help but think that his disposition vs. Hillary Clinton's were like night and day! She is always so crabby looking! There seemed to be a peace in Romney's expression that I've not noticed before. Hopefully, he'll stay that way.

What did you think? CNN is having a field day with it!

What's CNN saying about it? I personally didn't get to hear it, but some of it is in the paper and I heard a little on the radio this morning. I have felt bad for him up until this point because no one will let him just run for presidency without bring up the whole mormon thing. If you want to ask questions about his religion nonstop, then ask every other canidate the same questions about their faith. Hopefully with this said now, people will let him just run like everyone else that's running. I'm glad he did that because I know it might not have been the most popular thing to do, but he stuck to his guns about the church and I am very impressed.

Check out the "News Affecting our Family" sidebar and click on the "What Iowans Should Know About..." It will take you to a Wall Street Journal about Mormons. I think it's well written and I can relate to the story she tells in the last paragraph about 9/11 and BYU. I was there at that meeting. --Jess

Well, I guess instead of "well written" I meant to say "insightful." I don't have an opinion as to the quality of the writing; rather, I thought it was interesting. It's always interesting to read and educated outsider's opinion of Mormon culture or its people. Good or bad, it's interesting to see how we're perceived.

NPR radio was very impressed by Romney's speech yesterday. That shocked me. People that hadn't been impressed by him before had a change or mind. One thing I thought was interesting was one thing he said, "There are some...that would prefer it if I would distance myself from my religion, say that it is more a tradition than my personal conviction, or disavow one or another of its precepts. That I will not do. I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it." He then went on to say, "Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they are right, so be it."
I believe he is at peace with who he is and I have to admit that I am more impressed with him right now than I ever thought I would be.

Like Chelsey, I have been on the fence concerning Mitt Romney. Lately I have been more impressed with him. Starting with his speech I attended here at UI, and continuing on through his speech the other day he has made in roads with people like me. He has been dropping in the polls here in IA with Mike Huckabee roaring in like a lion. Huchabee, an ordained Baptist minister, has been making a big deal of his Christianity in TV ads which I think has helped. I hope Romney does well in the IA caucuses.

Noice that he did not say like Kennedy did that his religeous beliefs would not influence his presidency in any way. He said that his religeous beliefs would infrom his judgment. It has always seemed crazy to me when politicians have claimed that their religous beliefs would have no effect on their judgements polical or otherwise. That only means that their religeous beliefs are only top dressing to impress only the shallow minded.
