Tomorrow is Mike's defense for his Masters. He didn't bother to tell me but let it slip very nonchalantly earlier this week. He told me he doesn't want me there and it's not a big deal.
He also doesn't want to go to graduation but has to. Neither he nor I walked for our bachelors degree. I didn't because I had a job that wouldn't let me off work and I didn't have the funds to pay for the cap and gown and really I just wanted to be done. I just wanted the degree, I didn't care about the rest of the stuff. But, I recognize that it IS a big deal and wish Mike would at least let me make it a big deal.
Maybe I'll have to get him something. He won't want me to buy him a graduation present. Silly boy.
Another thing he doesn't think is a big deal is the fact that the sister of the girl he tutors twice a week had lice gel in her hair. I teach this girl at church and she sits on my lap weekly, and Isaac is in that class. Yeah, it IS a big deal and we've had a bit of tension in our house because of this. Hopefully all will be well and lice free when he goes back on Tues. If it were my choice he wouldn't be going back in a week.

Well good luck Mike. Go defend the crap out of that thesis!
Dave
Good luck, Mike. I didn't walk for either my BS or MS either. Like Adrianne, I just wanted to be done.
But I sure did love being there to here Jason defend his thesis. It was awesome!! Thank you for inviting us. I wish Mike would let you do the same, Adrianne. We loved hearing Jess defend his as well because it was really interesting. I think he should let you go and hear him defend it. That's my vote.
Congratulations to Mike! Awesome accomplishment!
I say if he won't let you buy him anything then go buy yourself something! Having a spouse in school is hard and being done should definitely be celebrated! -Jen
I totally agree with Jen! Having a spouse get his masters is hard on the whole family. When Hans got his masters, we celebrated by going on a Disney cruise. It is a big deal regardless of what Mike says.
And, the lice thing is a HUGE deal. That's just disgusting and I'm stay far far away from them.

Celebrate! I walked as an undergraduate and graduate student. The grad student walking was awesome: we got our degrees first and then I just left and skipped the rest of the hugely long meeting It was awesome.
Assuming he passes, sounds like a party is in order. If you don't, we will. -Jess
The actual thesis defense talk (the one Mom refered to) was the easy part. Actually defending my thesis in front of my committee was one of the worst experiences of my life. They were merciless. My boss was the worst. I wanted to wring his neck by the time we were done. I went home that afternoon completely exhausted. Three years of long hours and absolute dedication to one thing had finally come to a head and the relief of successfully defending my thesis was like someone finally giving me permission to sleep.
Celebrate your accomplishment, Mike. You and your family have earned it.
He passed but hasn't gotten his grade--that will come in a month. He said he was surprised at how laid back they were and he thinks if I was there they would have made a bigger deal about it all. But, he also said that his professor said he was surprised to find that I wasn't there. See! It is a big deal and I wish I could have gone. I wouldn't have understood anything he was saying but at least I could have gone to support him.
That's great, Mike - way to go!!
