Is it bad acne or something else?

Here are a couple of pictures of Jared. Can you guess the cause?

Jared is in complete pain misery. We spent almost 2 hours in the doctor's office today. They were shocked at this disease for such a young age.

is it shingles?

You are probably right, Nancy. It does look like that. Is that what it is?

I hope he gets feeling better soon!

It is indeed Shingles. I didn't think it was because it is extremely rare for a teenager to get shingles but I was wrong. The poor guy is in intense pain. Dan seems to think he is faking and smacked him in the back with a book this morning before seminary. Dan is lucky I wasn't awake because I would have probably smacked him back. As it is, he will be doing some weeding when he gets home.

I have never seen shingles so I had no idea what it was. Isn't that a kind of adult form of chicken pox? Maybe I'm just full of pox....
I'm sorry for Jared! Will be be going to school? When does it start for your kids?

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox. They do have some anti-viral meds available these days but they need to be administered within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms to be effective. We let Jared go over 72 hours because I didn't believe it was Shingles. I thought it was just a rash. It wasn't until he started getting pustules and began to experience pain in his armpits and elsewhere that we took him in to the doctor. Hopefully this will pass soon.

Isn't shingles something that can cause reoccuring pain on and off thru adulthood as well? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that once you've had it, it can occassionally flare up and cause pain again. Does anyone know if that's true?

And, how awful to get it just as school starts up again! That's one way to get out of going back, isn't it!

The doctor mentioned that since Jared got this at such an early age that he is likely to get it about every 10 years. She wasn't even sure why he got it since he had full blown chicken pox at 6 months old. Jared had chicken pox so bad that he had thousands and they were on top of each other. I couldn't count them all. He is in such horrible pain, but the doctor told him to go to school because the only people he is contagious to are pregnant women, babies who haven't had the chicken pox vaccine yet and older people who have cancer or other immune diffiency diseases. Also to give someone chicken pox from his Shingles, they would have to touch his open sores and put their hands in their mouths. Sick. So it's super unlikey that Jared will spread chicken pox to anyone. I just wish I could take his pain away, he says he feels like electrical shocks going through his body over and over and it's super painful.
