I Guess I Am One of the Idiots

Wow, your comments on my last post were amazing. First, for Hans.

Hugh Nibey is one of my favorite scholars. He is now dead, but he left a mass of writings. I remember his writings on the Book of Mormon being in the church magazine, the Improvement Era, when I was a teenager. Then I read the compilation of those writings when I was on my mission, a book called Since Cumorah. It was terrific. I still have it. I have read many others of his books, and the biography of him written by a son after his death. One of my sons gave that book to me as a present.

One of his best early books was called something like Lehi in the Desert and the World of the Jaredites. I read it many years ago, and loved it. Farms has published a whole series of his writings.

Democrat or not, is a excellent read. He was mainly a Democrat because of his belief in the need to protect and care for the environment. He did not believe the Republicans really believed in doing that. I say really, because of the fact that they usually let their belief in free enterprise not being inhibited to get in the way with the abuse of the environment. He thought they talked the talk but often did not walk the walk. Brother Nibley really believed this with passion.

I love his book, called Approaching Zion. He loved the subject and so do I. He spoke with passion and articulation on the subject. The book is mainly a compilation of speeches he gave on the subject.

I would think that if you get on the Farms website (which I presume they have) you can purchase their books.

For you all.

As for Beck, he is really great. I love the stuff he has been presenting in the last few days about the time of FDR. He is really an intelligent man, but he puts himself forward as being a regular guy that is just self educated. That he is. He read two books on FDR last weekend alone. Wow. How many of us read two books last weekend. Jason, maybe, but his life is reading.

For Jess and Jason.

The comments about O'Reilly and Hannity are a little bit out of sink with reality. I love their programs. They have their style, and they are very effective, albeit sometimes harsh. Anyone who listens with their mind and intelligence is able to kick out the bad and absorb the good. That is what you must do when you listen to CNN and other stations, too. I do not consider myself an idiot for listening and talking in the good from their programs.

I am really upset at the three Republicans that voted for the so called stimulus package. What is the matter with Maine, Jason? Spector has always been a nut as far as I am concerned.

This package will be no real help to things in our economy in the long term. We do not need to spend money, we need to be productive. Then things will be purchased and utilized according to real need. We always get out of sink with what we really need, that is just the nature of our society. But and artificial fix will only hurt, not help.

Senator Reid is a Democrat and a Mormon. I saw him speak at BYU. I know a lot about him. His views on some of the social issues are not often spoken of, but he definitely is for socialistic type economic and medical programs. I do not understand how he can have a great understanding of LDS principles in their true application. The same can be said of some Republicans, too. I do not like Reid and found his remarks at BYU to be foolish and shallow.

There are other things I would like to say, but this is enough for one post. The pot is sufficiently stirred.

I don't like talk show hosts for the most part - I think they are pompous nuts and on some days I think O'Reilly fits in that catagory. I think he is very condescending and I can't stand that in anyone. Dad and I disagree here.
Enough said.

Say what you want, but I'm still not going to like Bill "That's not harassment!" O'Reilly, Sean "You're a good American" Hannity, or Rush "Where are those pills again?" Limbaugh. Are there any Democrat-based radio shows here in Utah? Are they even allowed?

Dad, don't take my disgust at these shouting heads personally. If you start shouting your political views at me, I'll add a moniker as your middle name, too.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't like Paul "I still worship Bill Clinton" Begala or James "I'm the reason Area 51 exists" Carville.

I just want to listen to Pardon The Interruption on ESPN. Perhaps I'm shallow like Mr. Harry "I promise, I'm still Mormon!" Reid.

Hear! Hear! I agree 100% with Jess. I don't like anybody who thinks they are 100% right (or left as the case may be) and everybody else is wrong. I certainly don't have a problem with someone listening to O'Reilly or Hannity or Bernie Ward or Carville, as long as they don't swallow the drivel without listening to the other side also.

We have some neighbors who think they know what the LDS church is all about because their pastor has told them all about us or perhaps they watched the God Makers. I am continually surprised that people will choose to believe something simply because it is easy to do so rather than because it is correct.

The same is true with politics. I did not vote for President Obama but I am willing to listen to what he has to say if only to solidify my own position.

I do agree with Dad about everything he said regarding Hugh Nibley. For those of you who haven't had a chance to read much of Dr. Nibley's work, please do so - especially "Approaching Zion".

I forgot one thing about Nibley that I need to mention. He was not much of a capitalist. That is perhaps why some call him a Democrat. I do not know. He was so immersed in the doctrine of consecration and stewardship that he was not capitalis, he was a Zionist of the first order. Would that we all could be that, too.

I'm with Dad on this one--I really enjoy O'Reilly, Hannity, and Beck. I also enjoy Rush, and--though usually not quite as much--Laura Ingram, Niel Bortz, and Jerry Doyle (though the last two are more libertarian than purely conservative). If you want to hear true "shouting heads" you ought to try listening to Mark Lavin (sp?), Rusty Humphry, and Michael Savage--none of whom I can stand for very long these days.

I agree that the majority of these people are cocky, pompous insert-your-pride-noun-here, but they usually present an analysis of the news that more closely aligns with my own personal opinions and beliefs than I find in other news sources. I listen to talk radio anytime I am in the car and read the news (foxnews, msnbc, cnn--occasionally, sciencedaily.com--the most interesting of all my news sources, the early bird--military news collected from numerous newspapers and broadcasts) as often as I can. I try to keep in mind that while the majority of news source claim to be objective reporters of the news, they are, in fact, entertainment.

The primary reason I don't enjoy the leftist news (msnbc is my primary source) is that their analysis just seems so off from reality that I get fed up before I can finish reading and try to go find the same news presented elsewhere.

In any case, those are my opinions.

I would agree that those republican shouting heads more closely align with my personal views. I don't like news "entertainment" though.
