She came in through the bathroom window...

First, name the artist...

Hey, has anyone ever been through window replacement in their home? Our house is 22 years old and has some pretty pathetic windows. Their efficiency is a big reason our gas bill skyrockets during the winter.

But window replacement is awfully expensive. During the summer, I'm not too concerned. We have a swamp cooler and often have windows cracked open anyway. But during the winter, I always feel bad about the knowledge that we're losing a lot of hot air through poor windows.

We got our first bid on window replacements (9 windows and a sliding glass door) and let's just say I could buy my car 3.4 times for what they were saying it'd cost. Needless to say, we're not moving forward with this yet.

How have (or have?) you dealt with this?

Yes, we've had to buy new windows before. Remember when Brent decided to cut through the foundation of the Macfarland house? Lindsey's old apt? We had to make the windows bigger in order to have egress windows (big enough to climb in and out of in case of fire). Most older basements have really small windows. Lowe's had to special order 2 windows for us (we only ended up putting in 1) and it still cost $500 for the 2. Try Lowes or Home Depot for an estimate. They can install them too. Hopefully they'd be cheaper than a window place. Good luck.

The Beatles.

We have replaced 7 windows between the two houses we have owned. Six in the first house and one in this one. The first five windows were replacements for exisiting windows and the contractor (we did it throught Sears) wanted $5000 dollars. I laughed at him. We ended up getting the windows replaced for a significant discount but they were still very expensive. The sixth and seventh windows we had put in were part of remodels and required cutting the foundation. Needless to say they were very expensive also. Unless you do it yourself, this is going to be expensive. Doing it by yourself isn't too hard, just time consuming. Good luck.

I have wanted to do this for a long, long time. I can feel the cool air seeping through our windows and our living room is very cold sometimes. I have been thinking about replacing one window at a time to take the hit a little at a time. Would that be a stupid idea? Or do you get a discount for doing more than one window?

Most companies will require a certain # of windows before they'll come out. The guy we met with said he'd need to come out to replace 6 to make it worth his while.

Some companies give a "whole house discount." Yeah. 6 grand instead of 7. We were quoted at $4700 for our 9 windows and a 6 foot sliding glass door. Hmmm...which kid can we sell?

That's actually a pretty good price, Jess. It is still hard to swallow but if you are planning on selling anytime in the next 5 years, you will easily make it up. We made over $40K on our last house partly because we had new windows (among a lot of other upgrades). Better yet, wait until spring and do it yourself. You will save a lot of money.

Well, I'm thinking I'll wait until next Fall, when I need an efficient house again. I've already thrown away all my winter money...

I have no interest in installing the windows myself. 1 or 2? Maybe. 9? No way.

The title of the post was "She came in through the bathroom window." It's from a song by...(drum roll) The Beatles as Jason wrote.
