Learning to drive all over again

Because I'm going to Scout Camp next week at Bear Lake, I kinda want to take our van. I'll have a few boys with me and I'll haul some gear. However, if I take the van, it leaves Jen at home with my beloved Sentra (yes, the same Sentra that passed 123,456 miles recently). That's where the problem arises. Jen hasn't driven a manual transmission car since high school and admits that she was never proficient at it.

So, this morning before work, we all piled into the car (me, Jen, and the two girls in car seats) and went on a drive. We drove over to the church parking lot and Jen got her chance to drive the car and see if she could make the cut. I'll be honest: after the first few minutes, I'd resigned myself to driving the Sentra up to Bear Lake. However, she rapidly improved and I have hope. I think we'll try it again before I go.

Oh, the memories. I remember Mike having to teach me when I was very pregnant with Will. It was snowy and slick and I was freaked out. I had two days to learn and I am proud to say, while I am not a pro at driving a stick, I did pretty good. I still get nervous on hills though. I was always freaked to pick Mike up at school because the only way to get to him was to go up a very steep hill. I feel for Jen. Good luck!!

Lindsey about killed me once. She was up visiting us in Idaho when Michelle was in the hospital on bed rest. I had a 1978 VW Rabbit with a manual transmission. She had never driven one before so she didn't know what to expect. She popped the clutch and we took off. It was a small country lane and she was headed off the side. I yelled (screaming is not manly) at her to stop which thankfully she managed to do before we ended up in the ditch. Needless to say, that was the end of me trying to teach Lindsey how to drive a stick shift. Her version is probably a little different if she even remembers the incident. She will probably say that I screamed like a girl and hyperventilated while I changed my shorts. In retrospect, it was really quite funny.

Mmm...messy shorts...screaming like a girl...that's the Jason we all know!

Luckily, when Lindsey and I drove across the country from Philly to SLC, it was in her Mustang, thankfully, a fully automatic transmission.

She will say she is the best stick shift driver around...and I'm sure she is better than me, although, I never almost drove into any ditches.
