Diaper or Toilet?
Will has recently been going into Isaac's room and pulling out all of the tiny diapers in the drawer and bringing them to me. He brings them into me and then tries to put them on himself. At first I thought he was just showing me that he comprehended what diapers were but lately he only brings them into me when he is poopy or wet. He tries to take his diaper off of himself daily. Thankfully, he has never quite figured it out yet. One day he was taking a bath and stopped what he was doing to stand very still and had the "I need to poop" look on his face. I yanked him out of the tub and put him on the toilet. There was no diaper around and I wasn't about to have him poop in the tub. Obviously that freaked him out. He isn't ready for the toilet....but it stopped him from pooping in the tub and I was able to get him dressed with a clean diaper on. Anyway, boys are supposed to take forever to potty train, I hear. When do they start? Is he just showing me interest in diapers and in himself?

Abby started showing lots of interest in toilets when she was a few months older than Will. I was really excited because I thought maybe she would be potty trained early. The interest was short lived and was finally potty trained a year later!
Jen
Jen, I remember your frustration trying to get her potty trained. I figure, it is good that he is showing interest and showing me he knows he is wet but I can't imagine it will go much further for quite sometime. Who knows, maybe I have a genius boy who wants to be trained right now. I do think he is a genius but I doubt that is what he is telling me...
I wouldn't train him now --- not with Isaac coming so soon. They almost always revert to diapers, frustrating you more than if you had just waited. Wait a few months after the baby arrives, then go for it if he's still interested.
I agree with Chelsey -- there is always some kind of backlash when a new baby comes and it usually takes the form of starting to suck a thumb again or wetting again or whatever else you thought was conquered.
One thing I learned about boys -- have the dad take them in to the potty and let them show them how it's done. That works best.
About potty training boys. When you decide it's the right time, my best suggestion is train them to pee sitting down. My biggest regret is that I told them to stand. Boys make such a mess when peeing. Even adult men, it's like they never learned to aim and then they claim they do aim. Well I am the one cleaning around the toliet and the pee on the floor is disgusting and it's all the boys doing it.
Just to clarify--I'm not going to tain him yet. I really don't think it is time. I'm just wondering when it is time. How do you know when they are ready. And Michelle, Mike and I have already discussed it--Mike is the one that gets to teach him how to aim and stuff. Of course since I am home with him, it will mostly be me but when Mike is here, he gets to do it. I don't pee like a boy, Mike does, so I think he will be more effective. And my boys are cleaning their own toilet when they get old enough to do it! Yuck. I hate cleaning toilets.
What a topic!
Things have really digressed. You women need a blog of your own just to keep us men from being embarrassed.
Dad
I can't believe that Will really is going to finaly be potty trained soon. That's so weird that he will be a crazy little boy who always gets dirty and runs around the house. Well good luck when the time comes.
