I am so glad it is Friday. It has been a long, tiring week here at work. I made the mistake (?) a couple of weeks ago by showing my boss some data that got him excited. So, we designed an experiment to further investigate. For the last two weeks I have been busy just getting this experiment to the almost-time-to-collect-data stage. I have done so much surgery this week that I am going to start adding an MD behind my name. I now have a litter of rat pups that have no control of the right side of their face (we cut the facial nerve), no control of their right, rear leg (we crushed the sciatic nerve) and to top it all off, I deafened half of them. Actually, the deafening came first. I will carry this study out to 60 days (today is day 23), sacrificing a set of pups at regular time points. I just got done with 2.5 hours of tedious dissections and am ready to call it a week.
I hope you all have a good weekend.

I know this is for research, but it still sounds awful (crushed sciatic nerve, etc.). I had to tell myself that these are rats so it's ok.
Yesterday after I filled the car with gas on my way to work, I started the car and just then a HUGE rat ran out from under the car. I nearly freaked out because it had to have been there the whole time I was filling the car. At first I wondered if this animal was a badger or something because it was so huge!! You can have all the rats you want. Man, this one was the biggest thing I've ever seen.
It's been a busy week here -- the Stadium of Fire is tomorrow night so it means lots of orders, stress, missed orders, etc. I get to take both Monday and Tuesday off so I am looking forward to relaxing for the long weekend.
Happy Fourth of July to all of you!!
ANIMAL KILLER!!!!!!
but I still love you.

I think it is gross that you have to kill mice too...remember when we would help dad on the farm and he would kill the pigs when they had deformations and stuff? So sad. However, I do think it is cool that you are doing all this stuff for work. I know I've said it before but I am impressed by what ALL the brothers and brothers-in-laws do for a living. Very interesting and cool.
So, why are you hurting these poor, defenseless rats? Do you have a reason for crushing the nerves besides pure enjoyment? What are you trying to learn?
You couldn't pay me enough to have your job. Just the sight of ANY rodent paralyzes me with fear. Stupid, I know; but true. It's one too many farmhouses that did me in. I'm grateful there's some of us out there that can do the work you do. Good luck with the research!
