Winter's on its Way

Stay warm everybody. Winter's on its way. We received about 3" of snow yesterday and it was bitter cold this morning. More coming this weekend. Our tree that's in the middle of the deck lost all of its green leaves today (in one day as usual). We hadn't lost any leaves from our trees yet so it's going to be messy and difficult to get them raked. Goodbye, lovely autumn! I will miss you!!

I've been doing nothing but raking leaves this year, it seems. It has been a glorious autumn for us. Even the oaks, which normally just turn brown, have been bright orange. It is finally getting a bit cold and wet. Parts of Iowa (not us) got snow yesterday while the rest of us got tons of rain. I don't know that I am ready for snow yet.

We had our third snow yesterday. It is 18 degrees today. Honestly, I don't mind it because the sun is out and a lot of the snow already melted yesterday. We had school canceled for Isaac and school delayed for Will yesterday. I think even with all the snow we've had already that this will be a much better winter than the last two I've had.

I should say it's 18 degrees right now but our high is in the 40's so it'll warm up a bit.

So we've actually had snow twice in SLC but it didn't stick either time. It's much closer to winter in Elk Ridge than it is here in the valley. That, my friends, I am grateful for.

Anybody know how to replace windows on existing construction? I have a few I would love to replace before winter really sets in. -Jess

Sure, remove the trim and strip everything down to the framing. Ensure that the new window is square, shimming as needed and screw it in. Fill in the space around the window with insulation, replace the siding and the trim. That is window replacement according to This Old House. Good luck.

But I don't want to remove the siding. I want to figure out how to remove (via cutting?) the old aluminum window frame and then stuffing the new one in. I'm just nervous that I'll make a mess of it all. -Jess

You can do that too. Do you have a reciprocating saw? Windows are always a bit messy but it is nice to have new ones. We need to replace ours but I need to put a new roof on first.
