What we're eating this week

I've been making my grocery list this morning and thought I'd post what we are eating this week. Our groceries have been more expensive this month because of some changes to our diet (though, our diet hasn't had to change too much) so keep that in mind when reading what we are eating. We spent almost $100 last week and it made me almost choke. Food is expensive.

I don't have them split into days yet or full menu but here is what I'm planning:

sides:
cucumber and tomato salad
roasted baby carrots
paprika potatoes
fresh fruit salad
green salad
zesty cream cheese dip

breakfast:
breakfast burritos
banana and vanilla pancakes
eggs with toast ?
french toast with whole wheat bread and rasp. sauce
mom's muffins (possibly with wheat and flax seed, not sure) and eggs
cereal a few mornings

dinner:
chicken enchiladas with corn tortillas
apple pork chops
chicken alfredo pizza
avocado, jack cheese, tomato, and red onion quesadillas
leftovers
(I don't know yet what else we will have)

dessert:
yogurt with peach puree and rasp (frozen 'cause I can't swallow the price for fresh)
vanilla chocolate parfaits

Are you telling me you don't usually spend over $100 on your grocery bill for an entire week's worth of food? Ok, does anyone else think that's just crazy? I thought we were pretty cheap with groceries out here and we definitely spend over $100 most weeks. Of course the commissary doesn't have any generic brands, so we're forced to buy expensive brand name everything.

Lindsey, our grocery bill usually ends up being around $150 a week but I generally spend less than $100 on my weekly shopping trip and then end up making another trip during the week for more fruit, milk, bread, that sort of thing. Oh, and we also make a trip to Sams to stock up on stuff and if Mike comes, which is normal, then we buy more than expected. We always come away with more than we planned when he is there. So, this grocery trip I spent about $60 something at WalMart and then we spent $59 at Sams for syrup, honey, strawberries, chicken nuggets, frozen chicken, and yogurt.

Oh, okay. That sounds about right. I was going to say...what are you eating on such a small budget! It makes sense now. We also end up having to make about two trips a week for more fresh veggies and fruit and sometimes milk.

The Germans shop every single day. Wouldn't that be horrible! They all have these really tiny fridges that can barely hold anything. Although, at least their food is really fresh. I just won't like dealing with going to the store every day with the kids. How horrid!

Yeah, I agree. I usually do take all three boys with me to the store. Some trips they do better than others. I think we spend too much on our food budget. We spend about $600! That is crazy to me. I'm trying to have us eat healthy but I'm also trying to keep in the budget. Food has just gotten so expensive lately. That $600 also includes toilet paper, shampoo, dish soap, laundry detergent, that sort of thing.

I'm impressed you can get out of Sam's without spending more than $100! I spend far too much on groceries each week, but ir certainly easier to budget when you use with cash only. You figure out how to stretch things.

When we set up a food budget, sometimes we forget to add those things Lindsey mentioned -- TP, laundry detergent, shampoo, etc. Those aren't cheap and so Jim swallows hard when I come home with few groceries but everything else that forgot to be budgeted.
Food will continue to be expensive. Jim and I bought a case of tomato sauce last night because we aren't sure how the shortage of tomatoes will affect the manufacturers of tomato products. It is going to get a lot uglier in the next month or so. A lot of the food prices are also going up because of the freight cost in shipping.
Make sure you figure out how to substitute what you usually use in the way of fresh vegetables to ones you might not normally use if they are cheaper. Nothing is cheap right now. Tighten your belts, kiddos.
