What's the point?

I just got this email from the pta at Geoff's school:

"Chaperones are needed for school dances. If your child is hesitant to have you at the dance….not to worry…parent chaperones are stationed by the entrance/exit doors of the cafeteria and gym. Your child won’t even have to know you are there".

Does this statement seem weird to you? What's the point of a chaperone if they aren't doing anything but sitting at the door? When did we become so concerned with what our kids think, that we can't be real parents? Wow. Kudos to our brilliant school pta's out here. Everyone wants to be their kids' friend, not their parent.

Anyone see the episode of Parenthood on tv last night? It was actually rather funny. The parents were mad at their teenage daughter because she'd been dishonest with them and sneaking out behind their backs, so they took her bedroom door off. The lesson was about trust. If they didn't trust her, she didn't have any privileges at all. No phone, no personal laptop, no door. The girl was screaming mad and I sat there cheering on these parents that were actually portraying what a parent should be doing. Parenting! And the funny thing is this: Geoff hasn't had a bedroom door for about a month now. We removed it after one too many arguments and door slamming. Sorry kiddo, trust is earned. Maybe he'll get it back eventually. Maybe...

The point of a chaperone at those dances is to make sure little Jimmy and innocent Suzy don't leave the building and visit one of those little motels that rents by the hour, if you know what I mean.

School dances. Oh, the memories. That's where Adam always stole the show and won all the freshmen girls' hearts. Boy's got moves!

I don't even approve of school dances until the kids are at least 14-16. Dumb, dumb.

The thing is; at my school dances, its not really a DANCE. We have different rooms doing different things. One room has a movie, one has a sports game on, and the gym has sports/athletic competitions. And THEN, the cafeteria has music playing (no slow songs allowed, of course) and people dance.

Yeah, that sounds pretty dumb to me. A chaperone that isn't really there it chaperone...that's just silly.

I saw a preview for Parenthood but haven't seen it yet.

Brenden recently asked to go to his school dance. Brenden is only 13. So at first we said No. Then we found out that the Middle school "Dance" is really like Geoff said "A school party" I'm pretty sure we will let Brenden go, but I will be a chaperone there and I will watch the children whether they like it or not.

Is the parenthood TV thing you are refering to the movie by that title? The one with the comic Steve Martin?
I thought the movie had many things that were funny, but some really bad parts. I did not watch much of it. I do not remember the door part. Either I missed that or I am thinking of the wrong movie.

Dad, it's not the movie Parenthood. It's a new NBC show on tues nites. There's still an occasional storyline that should be chopped, but I'm drawn to this show because its the only show I've ever seen that actually talks about the difficulty of parenting a child with aspergers. It's about time autism was represented on TV.
