Idaho

I went to Mackay, Idaho with Elisabeth to hear Calli report her mission. I had never been to Mackay and now that I've been, I want to go again -- and again -- and again. It is a spectacular valley. It was cold! 3 degrees above zero this morning. It finally warmed up to about 13 degrees today.

This airplane is in the front yard of Stephen and Julie's place. I couldn't get very close to it because of the snow but it's cute.

This is the view in their back yard. The river is the Lost River -- there is a big mountain range behind that is covered with clouds. This is the view from their living room and kitchen.

The strangest ice formations were coming off their house. I couldn't resist. I've never seen anything like it. They looked like birds in flight.

The wind blows all the time in this valley. Elk Ridge actually has deeper snow than Mackay, but with drifts like this, it makes driving hazardous - noticed buried fence. The snow was deep enough and hard enough that I could walk on top without falling through in most places. (I walk on water, so why not snow?) :)

Mt. Caleb, one of the highest mountains in the state of Idaho. This is the Lost River Range and this is the view in front of their house.

This morning I was rudely awakened by a big, pesty brother who had been outside in that frigid weather. He snuck over to the bed and then grabbed my neck and face with his cold, icy hands. That started a battle that I finished after lunch. I went outside to take a few photos - came in and grabbed his neck with my icy hands. We were even.
Calli's report was beautiful and very touching. When I see you all at our family dinner in February, I will tell a story she shared but it would take too long here. She is filled with the missionary spirit and she's a beautiful young lady.
It was a great trip! Now I can't wait to take Jim and Ammon back up this summer.

It sounds like we are about as cold as them. We've been in the teens and single digits here. Yucky. I think it might get into the low 30's? Here's hoping.

I'm glad you got to go to the farewell. I've always like Calli nad I'm sure it meant a lot to them to have you guys come.

Yeah, what family dinner in Feb? Looks like the kind of place you could escape to and forget your worries. As long as you had a big heavy coat, that is!

If I'm thinking of the same dinner idea, I think we're going to start doing a family dinner the 2nd Sunday of every month. One month it'll be in Elk Ridge; the next month in SLC. That kinda puts Gilly/Kev and Kaitlin in an-always driving bind, but at least their drive is somewhat short compared to the other options. I think Amy approached Jen with this idea. Not sure if that was the true genesis, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. -Jess

Yes, that's the story. Amy spearheaded the dinner idea and we're excited to get it going again. We used to do it before so many of you moved away. So we're starting again. Kevin, Gillian and Kaitlin could all ride up with us - we have room when we get to go to SLC.

Don't worry, it was warm when Chris got home. She had a great time and I even enjoyed talking to her in the car on my trip from Lehi where I picked her up.

Man, she was only gone for two days and I got cold. She must stay home, or at least take me when she goes. I had to teach my Gospel Doctrine class, and I don't teach it every week, so I could not miss.

Also, you outlanders could always come to the dinner in February. Don't you think that is a great idea?

I was wrong--it got into the 20's today. But it was in the single digits this morning when we woke up.

I like the airplane. Too cool. Is that something that was there or did they put it there? The ice formations are too awesome, pretty neat that you noticed them to get a picture. As far as cold temps go, we are getting our share of teens and below. Last week we had negative temps for several days. I'm not sure how our heater stays on but glad it does.

Our winter is actually turning into something nice lately. We've had enough disturbances to keep any inversion at bay but haven't been that cold. In fact, we've hit 40 a lot in the last few weeks. This I can handle.

I'm not ready for spring yet (mow the lawn? ugh.), but I'm tired of snow. -Jess

The airplane (with the skeleton man inside) was there when they moved in. the lady who owns the house is an artist and she has all sorts of interesting things. It was so fun having you up here, it's really hard to get anyone to visit. I'm excited for you to come back this summer, you can see where we live too. Have fun family dinner-ing it.
