Reliving Memories
I asked Ammon what he wanted to do this weekend while I was home. He had been recently looking at family photos and saw the photo we took on his 1st birthday up Payson Canyon where all of you were hiding behing quaking aspens with arms and legs stretched out but no heads showing. It's one of my all-time favorite photos. He wanted to go see that place again. So today Jim humored us and we went to the top of Payson Canyon.
First stop, we needed to document the canyon where Jim, Lance and David had to climb down when they got lost. You all know the story. Here is that canyon.
Directly across from this canyon is Maple Dell Scout Camp. Since I am female, I had never seen the inside of the camp. Ammon will probably never get to see it or go to it again so we went in and drove around. I couldn't believe how HUGE the place is.
The photo above is the lake (I'd call it more of a pond) where they hold canoe races at the camp. I sure hope they don't swim in it. David and Lance will recognize this camp.
Each campsite has a name - mostly Indian names. I thought Jess would really love to use this campsite with his scouts sometime.
A typical camp site - so gorgeous.
Finally - the very top of the canyon at the exact spot where we took the original photo. You cannot make out the little stump Kaitlin stood behind but it's off to the left of the photo. I got out thinking I would walk up to the stump. Mind you - this is a walk, not a hike and not a climb. As I got up there I couldn't breathe very well and realized - oh heck, it's almost 9,000 feet in elevation, you are walking uphill and you have pneumonia. Get back down! So I did. but it was worth it to get the last shot. (I just get so bored. I'm grateful for Jim's help today and for taking me up this little memory lane.)

That sounds like a great way to spend the day! We're jealous! The pictures are great...love those colors! -Jen
Oh man, the memories...
That was quite a night up there with Dad and David. "Dad, if we get outta here, I promise I won't swear again..." -David P. Clark (or at least something like that) Ha ha, we were both kinda freaked out/slash excited about the situation. I felt so cool when we got picked up by the search and rescue.
hahah! chelsey and I talked about that today when she visited... 'i remember getting a poweraide from the search and rescue and the cap had like $50 off any shoes at foot locker. it was all worth it.
Yeah, nice way to ruin my bday fellas. I thought mom's call at 6:30 am was a bday song, but no...you "so called scouts..." were stinkin lost!!
As for the pictures, they're definitely making me miss those mountains!
I was kneeling at my bedside in Shenandoah, IA, that night and felt a very strong impression to pray for my family that night. I remember it as if it were yesterday because I remember it being Chelsey's birthday and that it was weird how strong that impression was. I understood a few weeks later when Mom wrote the letter explaining what happened that fateful night. I love Payson Canyon, but not enough to want to be in the situation those three fellas were in! -Jess
Oh yeah! I was freaked out of my mind! I will admit... I missed Lance more than David though. haha! Dave was not very nice to me as a child. It's okay though, he grew out of the phase.
I don't remember actually taking the tree picture with my little stump but I remember that night you boys got lost and freaking out when you never came down the trail and it was dark.
Mom also ran over a bobcat that night. We were so scared in the car. I am happy you were all found the next morning. I am very happy that you stopped to sleep when you did instead of walking to your death as you fall off the side of the cliff. That would have been a huge tragedy.
First of all, we didn't take the tree stump picture on the same night. It was a different night. Also, mom didn't run over a bobcat. We did see one, or a mountain lion or something. But she did not run over it.
It was a pretty scary night. I was the oldest at home and I remember every part of it clearly. I remember the hike, mom going back up to look for them, writing a note for them telling them we were going home to get help and feed Ammon. I called my friend Scott, whose dad was a search and rescue worker and then we called the bishop. They went and searched and mom sat in the rocking chair with this crazy look on her face. It was scared but she didn't shed any tears in front of me. She just kind of sat there and I told her I knew the boys were fine and would be found. At 2 AM I finally went to sleep but mom stayed up in that chair. The bishopric came back telling us they couldn't find the boys and dad. Then I woke up at 5 to deliver the boys papers for their paper route and on my way home, the boys and Dad drove by in the truck.
okay everyone... Enough about the dave was not nice as a child...! what a silly accusation.
