A Book Review

I suggested to Adrianne & Mike that they read a new book I just finished because it might give Mike some ideas as he's writing his own book. I highly recommend reading "The Hunger Games," by Suzanne Collins. There is a second book and I think a third will follow. This is a very unusual book - I kind of think it's a cross between "The Giver" and "The Lord of the Flies," about a society that has unraveled and has set up a gov't that doesn't work. The consciences of young people are awakening in the midst of the horrors of "The Hunger Games" they are required to participate in.

I think this would be disturbing to someone as young as Geoffrey although he has read all of the Harry Potter books. We all know that Harry Potter isn't real - but "The Hunger Games" could be - and that is why it might be distrubing to someone young.

I would love to have a discussion about this book. Kaitlin's friends gave it to her and then I stole it. We have talked about it at length. If you can find a few spare hours, read the book then call me or post something.

I've read both "The Hunger Games" and the sequel "Catching Fire". I enjoyed both of them, though they are a little disturbing. John (7th grade) has read them and also liked them. I think I'll wait a couple of years before suggesting that Cristina (5th grade) read them.

I've had lots of friends read this book -- in fact I think it was one in the ward book club. They all seemed to like it as well. I haven't read it but would like to.
