Are your schools showing the address today?
Just wondering if those of you with kids in school are having the presidental address shown in classes today. Our school (elementary) is going to tape the address, let students opt out if they don't want to watch it, and allow teachers to show the address if it follows their lesson plans or something. I just read the address myself online and can't honestly say there's anything wrong with it. I understand how people have been so upset by the idea of our president talking in the schools live, but the speech is really pretty harmless. The administration should've just said outright they would release the contents of the speech ahead of time when they announced they'd be speaking to the kids. Then parents wouldn't have freaked out as much. I personally think our president should encourage our kids to do their best in school --regardless of their circumstances. Just do your best. There's nothing wrong with that message.

I heard that he encourages stem cell research in the speech. If so, that would indicate a political agenda. Is that in there? Maybe it was just a scare tactic and it isn't in there, but I wouldn't really want my young kid to think that was ok without a lot of parental discussion about it first.
I heard about that from an NPR interview (and I rarely listen to NPR).
I don't understand the fuss AT ALL. I think it's a bunch of ultra conservative people with their undies in a bundle concerned that their resident devil (Obama) will try to brainwash their kids. I say there are much more evil things to hear and see than a president speaking, even if he did make it political! Jess
NO, there's nothing of stem cell research in there! Good grief NPR! Unless there's a change in the published speech and he's going to give an alternate one to the kids, there really isn't anything to worry about. You can easily find it online. He only states that the kids should try to stay healthy and strong so they don't miss school, so don't forget to wash your hands. Pretty harmless. Nothing else at all.
Chelsey,
Where can I find the address online? I'd like to read it. As long as there isn't a political agenda that is really stamped as "liberal", the president should be able to address whomever he wants. Laura Bush was all about reading and improving school scores and spent lots of time in schools.
Is it possible he might have changed some of the message after the expressed outrage of parents?
The person that was interviewed on NPR said they had read the message and it did say something about stem cell research. Maybe Obama changed it a bit?
I don't know. I would like to read the message.
The issue isn't what he said in his speech. He initially had a different speech but had lesson plans sent to the schools and had questions in there like, "What can you do to help the President reach his goals?" Some mumbo jumbo like that. I don't think anyone has issues with the President of the country talking to their children. I think it is the scare that he is inserting himself into the schools. I got most of this info from Mike but I have listened a bit to Rush and Beck lately too. Anyway, I think that is the issue, not the speech. Mike read the speech and it was pretty good. There was some talk about a more fair America. I didn't know America wasn't fair except in the eyes of the black opressed Americans. Just as an extreme example, and this is extreme so don't think I really saying this is the same but Hitlers youth started by a targeting the younger kids. Go ahead, roll your eyes. I'm not saying he's Hitler and I'm not saying he shouldn't speak to our kids. I'm just saying....
Here's where I found the speech. I suppose it is possible the speech was changed. They should've just been smart enough to send out a copy to the press long ago so it wasn't this big and issue. Parents can then decide if they want their kids to listen or not. I don't think this particular version is a big deal at all. Nothing I wouldn't want or even expect my kid's teachers to say.

I tend to agree with Adrianne. Now, I don't have a problem with what he said (now that he changed it) but I do think that President Obama should be more worried about other things that telling my children to work hard and wash their hands. I didn't ask for his help (or any other member of the government's help either) raising my children by repeating things they have heard a thousand times already. Really, didn't he have a rotting health system to fix or some other American travesty to remedy? If he wants to make a difference, then how about stepping up and taking a leading role in carbon emissions and other factors that may or may not be leading to global warming rather than abdicating that role to the countries of Europe.
His speech would have been much better received if it had been delivered by the First Lady.
Adrianne and Jason have it right. The problem was what was given out in advance. The conservative responce made him revise what he did. And what he said was good and not out of line. But the advance stuff was very objectionable and if you did not get your pants in a not then you are not very well informed and are following a line of those whose goal and method is deception.
