Things that Matter, Things that Don't

Rascal Flatts has a new song out titled Things that Matter. I was listening to it this morning when I remembered something Jake said in the car last night. We were all coming home from pack meeting when, for some reason, Geoff asked Brent what a CEO was. Brent said it was the president of a company. Then Geoff asked if Brent was a CEO, whereas Brent responded he wasn't. Brent said he was only the president of the company's finances. That was called a CFO, not CEO.

So as we're talking about all this, Jake gets all upset and yells out, "NO DADDY, You're just my DADDY!!" It was funny and cute all at the same time. I looked over at Brent and teased him that "out of the mouth of babes" we're reminded what really matters. I think it made Brent feel good to see how much his little boy just adores his daddy. It makes me a little emotional to remember how humble our children can make us. They bring us both our greatest joy and our deepest pain sometimes. Funny how that works. I guess we can only hope we have more joyful moments than painful ones!

I'm so glad you wrote this down. It helps all of us remember what's really important. I recently listened to a tape by a man that has written several best-sellers. His name is Jeff Benedict and the title of the CD is "I Am A Mormon." He wrote a book called "The Mormon Way of Doing Business," telling how 8 of the nation's CEO's, who are Mormon do business. He talked about their lives away from work. The CEO's are from JetBlue, Deloitte & Touche, Madison Square Garden (David Checketts), etc. and one thing he said in the CD is that one of the men said, "I've had lots of titles in my life: CEO, CFO, Stake President, Bishop, etc., but those all come and go. There is one title that will never go away and that is of father and husband. Those are the titles that really matter." It was cool - Just think Jake may be one of those guys in the future because he already gets it.

I have that book. I bought it at DI for $2. I'm not a big fan of Dave Checketts, though. Seems like Mitt Romney -- a little slimy. Polished exterior...

I guess "slimy" is a little harsh for Mitt Romney. 2012!

I am late reading this since it is now well into May. But I thank you for what you wrote. It makes me teary both in its message, and in wanting to see that little guy who says such things.
