SPRING
Don't tell anyone, but I think SPING is on the way. I can finally see most of my lawn and I even have a few tulips that just broke though the surface. My favorite thing to do when I get home from work everyday during the spring is to walk around my various flower beds to see what is coming up. I am also excited to do some additional planting. I have some astilbes to transplant and several different types of flowers to plant including a clematis, some verbascum, and some hardy cyclamen. I am finding that the key to success growing anything in Iowa City is soil prep. We have high clay content which makes it difficult to grow many different types of flowers. As soon as the last of the snow is gone and my flower beds are more than mud, I am going to mix in a little sand and some compost. Most of my flower beds are in partial or total shade and I am always looking for good suggestions regarding what to plant. If any of you have any ideas, please pass them on.

I hear corn and soybeans are real popular in Iowa...
We have high clay content here too. Somethings that seem to grown really well here are snake grass, daffodils, tulips. There are two other plants that we have in our yard and that we see all over that I really love. One is a bush though. They both look kind of tropical to me. Also, you can grow Mexican Heather (it's a filler plant) and impatience grow really well in part shade. You should really ask Adam this question because he knows tons about this.
Do you ever plant vegies or fruit? They seem high maintainance, but lately I've been thinking how nice it would be to have them in your back yard any time you want to use them. The idea sounds nice to me.

Begonias are gorgeous plants and need to have shade. Plant some of those!!
We apparently have some rain moving through tomorrow (possible snow) but today has been so gorgeous it's been hard to stay in the building and work. I, too, think spring is on its way.

I love it...it's come full circle. Amy suggests veggies. Corn is a vegetable! Looks like corn is your ornamental flower of choice. Go for it! -Jess
