How 'bout them Hawks?

Iowa won its 21st national wrestling title yesterday. After Saturday's round, we were only up by three points over Nebraska but really turned on the juice yesterday and ended up winning the tournament by about 40 points. We also crowned two individual champions and 7 all-americans. It obviously was a good year for us. We even beat Iowa State who is a great team and is coached by one of collegiate wrestling's all time greats - Utah native Cael Sanderson. If you never had the opportunity to watch Sanderson wrestle, you really missed out. He was amazing to watch. He is one of only two collegiate wrestlers that I am aware of to go undefeated his entire collegiate career. The other is Dan Gable, the legendary Iowa wrestling coach who led Iowa to 10 consecutive NCAA championships back in the 80s. As lousy as our basketball and football teams are doing lately, it is nice to have something to be proud of.

I'm assuming Sanderson is going to the Olympics this summer? Why do wrestlers have funny ears?

Sanderson went to the last Olympics and got a Gold medal. It's called cauliflower ear. It happens when you don't wear your head gear and your ears get grabbed. It can also happen if your head gear is not quite tight enough. Essentially, the cartilage in your ear breaks down.

Congrats! I know they always have a strong wrestling program. It's nice when you can have one sport to redeem yourself, huh!
Our basketball team didn't quite make it but they are just juniors and there's several freshmen on the team - we hope to have a few good years ahead of us.
I felt bad when BYU quit their wrestling program. Well, we'll hand it over to Iowa.
