Makes me Smile Monday

My friend does a post every Monday about something that makes her smile. This week it is the 80's. I was trying to think of something from the 80's and could only remember a few things. What do you guys remember about the 80's? What fads did you wear? What movies? Music?

I look at pictures of me as a child and I'm so embarrassed. The way I did my hair, the way I dressed, all of it - it's just so embarrassing. I was big into the poofy bangs and I always wore very large earings, which my mother couldn't talk me out of to save her life. Let's see, what else - jelly shoes, jelly bracelets, garbage pail kid cards (anyone else collect those?), a few different colored socks all on your feet at once and you strategically place them up your ankle so everyone can see all the colors...my goodness.
Those are just a few things off the top of my head!

Remember blue mascara? Scary I know.

Q: What's grosser than gross?
A: 10 babies in one garbage can.

Q: What's grosser than that?
A: One baby in 10 garbage cans.

When Amy said "garbage pail kids" I immediately thought of that joke I heard when I was in elementary school...in the 80's. Kinda gruesome, I know. I did love garbage pail kids, though.

And we all went through the phase of pegging our pants. How incredibly stupid was that.

Most of you are too young to really remember the glam metal era of the early to mid 80s. But when I was in 8th grade, bands like Twisted Sister ("We're not gonna take it") and Quiet Riot ruled the rock stations. Rap also underwent a huge change in the 80s from the fun DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's brand of rap to NWA and Ice Tea's brand of rap. I really liked Depeche Mode and Alphaville ("Forever Young") back then. You also can't forget everybody's favorite Grammy award winning pseudo band - Milli Vinilli. I really liked them.

I was, however, never one to dress with the fads. The only time(s) I have ever pegged my pants is while riding my bike to work. I did, however, have a mini-mullet in the 8th grade. How embarrassing.

Garbage Pail Kids rocked! You know how they were always a little gross? I thought they should have made one called Shorn Sean. It would be a kid with a razor shaving his face. No shaving cream of course but there would be a big curl of skin above the razor as he attempts to shave against the grain. Kind of like when you are planing wood with a hand plane. I am probably not describing it well but my mind's eye is begging to be poked out.

Ouch! I can see the skin peeling back with the razor from your description. I'm surprised they didn't have one like that.

I pegged my pants a lot. I guess all it did was create tapered leg jeans. Skaters these days do that by wearing girls tapered leg jeans. How weird.

The only good thing that came out of the 80's was a World Series appearance by the Giants in '89 (of course, they got swept by the A's and also had to deal with the earthquake).

I remember in the 80s that Jason sang a solo in their choir concert -- I think it was a Lionel Richey song. Am I right?
Anybody remember the Farrah Fawcett hairdo? Natural hair was a late 80s thing -- that is why I had it permed and would then wash it and let it air dry -- like the photo in our hall.
Oh yeah and PCs -- we got our first computer in Citrus Heights. I remember learning how to do an art kind of thing on the computer and I drew a picture of what I thought Camp Winton must look like where Jason had gone.
Do you remember our "arm"? We got that in the 80s -- it wasn't an 80s thing but that is when we bought it. Do you remember the night I put the arm hanging out of the freezer and David went in to the kitchen and saw it and started to scream and cry? He ran in to find me and said, "Dad's in the freezer!" It was soooo funny! I loved that arm.
Remember the song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight?" I remember Jason lying on the floor listening to anything and everything by The Nylons. I thought there was some really good music that came out of the 80s.

Hmmm. I remember the arm and the Nylons. I'm with Jess though, while the memories are fun, I have never been a fan of the 80's and I don't like 80's music or early 90's music.

There were some great movies in the 80s also. How about Ferris Bueller's Day Off? That is one of my all time favorites.

Jess, I did own a pair of tapered leg pants. They were light denim. I thought they were the coolest. OH! I just remembered. Parachute pants. Do any of you remember them? Or how about the old style Converse basketball shoes that made a come back? I am sure Chelsey remembers them. She had a pair. I used to make so much fun of her because I thought they made her feet look big - sorry, Chels.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad I don't remember much of the eighties because that means I'm younger than all of you! :)

The funny thing is that Converse are still selling like hotcakes with the young'uns these days. What about the movie Strange Brew? Anyone remember that one, eh?
