"Hi, Dr. Jennisen." "Hi, Jason, what's it been? Two Weeks?"

Ah, yes, another Sunday afternoon in the ER. Dr. Jennisen doesn't know me quite well enough to call me by name but I am sure he recognizes me by now. I sincerely hope that was the last visit for a long time. A couple of the boys came home from church today with treats from their teacher (a pet peeve of mine). Jared kindly enough shared some of his with Scott upon which Scott could resist taunting his sister. Alyssa didn't say much but finally she lost her temper and gave Scott a sisterly shove into the corner of the wall. We didn't realize Scott was hurt until after I had sent Alyssa to her room. Scott was sitting on a bar stool when I came back downstairs and we then noticed blood soaking into his shirt. He had a gash in the back of his head that was bleeding freely. I can only assume that we didn't notice it at first because his super thick hair was keeping the blood from running down his neck. I really didn't want to take him in but after I got the wound cleaned up a bit, I saw that it was really too large to take care of myself. Thankfully, the ER wasn't too busy and we got back home within an hour and a half with another hospital bill and Scott with five staples in his head. As a side note, when Alyssa saw all the blood on Scott's head, she bawled her head off. I felt bad for her but she still had to spend some time in her room.

Other than that (and a very grumpy 13 year-old), today has been a perfect day.

By the way, I hope my comment about the VA hospital didn't upset anybody. It was meant to play on a stereotype. The Iowa City VA hospital is a beauracratic nightmare where just about the only department that gets any support is Orthopedics. I have a lot of respect for the servicemen and women of our nation and feel that they deserve more than they seem to be getting here. The physicians they see are among the best in the nation but there just aren't a lot of resources.

Your poor kids. And poor parents. I hate taking the boys into the doctor and the emergency room is even more annoying. Thankfully we haven't had to do that yet.

Wow! You got out of an ER within an hour and a half. We used to make bets as to how long it would take us to get out of one. We were in one for 5 1/2 hours once at PCMC -- in the middle of the night! I'm sure sorry that you had to pay the expense again. I can't believe that Scott wasn't screaming his head off until you noticed -- maybe he was but you didn't mention that. I'm glad he is ok and it sounds like it was a good lesson for Alyssa. Ask your sisters about them pushing (and being pushed) down a flight of stairs. Scary!!

Thanks for the funny stories (well, I guess they are only funny in retrospect). Glad the bleeding has stopped!

What a headache! Hopefully things with the hospitals calm down at your house. Good luck.

Poor Scotty - hope he heals quickly! And we sure do hope that Alyssa has learned her lesson about pushing her brothers! Violence is never the answer... :)

Caleb only seems happy these days when I make waffles for breakfast. This morning was one of the most wonderful mornings and he was happy and not teasing anyone, but I did make waffles. This is the only thing I can figure out that's different on the nice mornings.
Since I can't do this everyday what does everyone suggest?

My version of waffles in the mornings before school are -- FROZEN! Thank heaven for eggos! Sarah also has to have waffles for breakfast almost every morning, or she gets upset. What's so special about waffles? They're good and all, but every morning? Does waffle mix keep? Can you have some already mixed in the fridge and then all he has to do is throw it in the pan if you don't have time? I don't know, maybe that won't work. Good luck.

I am sorry that I have not been on the blog for a while. When I read this about Scotty and Alyssa I felt bad for them, but since the outcome was positive I am actually smiling at this. Having a family is an adventure. Don't tell the kids, but it is just as much the parents as the kids that learn. My parenthood has not ended yet with kids at home. It perhaps will never end with married kids and their children.

I think of the time when Chris was in the hospital and I was taking some of the kids to see her. We were in the truck at the farm in Nebraska. I had recently gotten some new rock on the road down by the shop and as we were just getting started the truck door opened and Adam fell out onto his head and opened it up. It required several sticthes.

That was only one of you and one story. There are lots of others.

Home Scotty is getting better. Where did he get pushed to cause such and injury? Also, I guess that being one girl in a family of five boys can be very frustrating even for a sweetheart like Alyssa.

Bye for now. Dad Clark
