Happy Conference Weekend

Two quick things: Happy Birthday, Lindsey! It was fun talking to you and a little exciting (it was my first international phone call ever!). Happy 25th.

Secondly: One of the great things about living in Utah is that I often get the opportunity to attend portions of conference in person. I attended the Priesthood Session last night with two friends from my ward. The talks were good, but I'll admit that I was more touched by the closing hymn than by anything else. There was a BYU men's chorus in attendance and when they sang "Be Still, My Soul" as the closing hymn, it was absolutely amazing. I don't imagine most people felt the same way I did, but that song and the way it was presented meant more than any talk I heard yesterday. It was amazing! Did anyone else get pulled in by that song?

I wasn't there, obviously so I didn't get to hear it. I will say though that I love Men's Chorus. I had the opportunity to do a video taping with all the choirs at BYU that were try-out choirs and it was an amazing experience. I remember one time in particular. It was a practice session and the Women's Chorus had to stand in the balcony for the taping of some of the songs. I was going through a rough time at school and the Men's Chorus sang a song that I will never forget. I don't remember the name of the song but some of the words were, "Oh how I love my Savior. Oh how I love my Savior. Oh how I love my Savior because he first loved me!" I have felt the spirit many times through song but I will never forget how I felt when they sang that. It was awesome. I wrote about it in my journal even. Anyway, this is a long comment. Oh, and...I will always be grateful that I got to sing in the tabernacle with the combined choirs the Saturday afternoon session of conference. It was the second session in the new conference center. It was amazing and I felt the spirt so strongly sitting behind the Prophet and apostles.

Unfortunately for the women, we won't get to hear that beautiful song. However, I loved the rendition of "The Spirit of God" with the three men during conference. I have heard the arrangement before (video clip I sent all of you showing the growth of the church by stakes) and it gives me chills. Did anyone notice the subdued nature of the Mormon Tab. Choir this time? They were so soft and subdued through most of their songs. It was interesting to me. I also thought that it was interesting that no other choir sang during the Saturday sessions. Usually they invite one other choir to sing for one session.
Good session!! Elder Holland and Elder Eyring spoke just to me -- no one else.

Be Still My Soul is my favorite hymn. It is one of only two hymns that I can marginally play on the piano. That song always gives me peace and comfort. I love conference weekend. We normally listen to conference over the internet but this year I made everybody get dressed and go to the stake center to watch. The boys weren't happy but I think there is a different spirit when you are dressed appropriately and sitting in the chapel than when you are lounging around in jeans and a t-shirt. I certainly enjoyed the talks I got to hear.

Happy Birthday, Lindsey. I hope Hans spoiled you yesterday. By the way, I would love to see you when I go to Barcelona. I will let you know more details when I get them and then we can see if a visit is even possible.

Take care all,

Jason
