Mike just took the GRE and got a 1440. I don't know what that means because I never had to take the SAT but I think it is good. I am very proud of him and we are going to celebrate his good job. Any ideas what we should do for our celebration? How is everyone else doing today?

I'm not sure what "good" is on that test, either, but I don't think SAT and GRE scores are comparable. I do know this: Mike smoked me! I tested good enough to get into grad school, but it was nothing to write home to mom about. Maybe I should have studied longer than the approx. 3-4 hours I put into preparation.
The GRE is a compilation of three scores with a possible 800 points on each section (I think). Most programs are only interested in the Math and Language portions. The Analytical portion is largely ignored - which is unfortunate because I scored a 750 on that section. Also, most programs are not interested in the overall score but rather the percentage. For example, although I scored better on the Analytical protion than the Language portion, my percentage on the Language protion was higher. I don't know about Engineering programs but Idaho State required us to have above 50% on the both the Language and the Math. It sounds like Mike did a great job. Congratulations.

I think now they give you a score on the writing portion between 0 and 6:
GRE General Test Score Scales
Three scores are reported on the General Test:
* a verbal reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
* a quantitative reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
* an analytical writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments
So, a score of 1440 is pretty dang good and would warrant scholarships if the schooling weren't already paid for by the military.
It is obvious that I took the GRE a long time ago, isn't it? With the new scoring system, Mike, you did an incredible job.
I know for sure he got a 770 on the math and a 670 on the English. He didn't take the writing part because it isn't required at AFIT.
I did better on my English part than the Math section. I was always really good at math growing up but starting with my ACT, I've consistently scored better on the English part ever since. My best part of my GRE, however, was the analytical writing section, which, like Jason said, no one really cares about.
Mike, awesome job! When I took it, they had a logic/analytical section, a math section, and a verbal section. There was no writing section unless required by your program. I got a perfect score on the analytical section (which i think wasn't that hard) and very well on the verbal, but only slightly above average on the math part. It's a hard test, I think. 1440 is awesome. Glad you are infusing some good smart genes into the family gene pool!
