Caleb went to a 2-day flight camp last week at our nearby Iowa City airport. After camp they got to schedule a 1/2 hour flight with an instructor so they can put to use everything they learned.
Caleb was thrilled and today was his flight. Can you see his excitement?
Going down the runway to take off.

That is so awesome! When I saw the second picture of Caleb I thought he looked just like David. Funny huh? I think it would be so cool if he learned how to be a pilot.
That sounds right up his alley! What a fun camp. Hummm. And my kids are suffering in the heat through 8 wks of golf lessons! Is this a community sponsored thing? It's got to be pricey! I would like to sign up for something like that myself! Way to go Caleb! Can you fly your family out to Utah for a visit now?
This camp is a new thing the airport is trying for this year. It hasn't ever been done before. Caleb asked me daily to go check out how much flying lessons would be. I told Caleb lessons would be too much for our budget and he said, "Well you have to check it out before you say no for sure." He continued to ask me over and over, so one day I went to the airport and the man mentioned the camp and it was only $50 for 2 full days, it included a t-shirt and lunch both days, then for $30 extra he could have a half hour flight with an instructor. I figured for a once in a lifetime thing that $80 isn't so bad. It's the only camp Caleb is doing this entire summer. And to see the look on his face it's worth it. Plus all day it's all he's talked about. It's so neat to see him interested in something worthwhile. Maybe someday he will get his pilot's license.
Okay, the first thing I thought was that he looked just like David in that second picture too! I am extremely jelous of Caleb right now. I have always wanted to take flying lessons. My dream job would be a helicopter pilot in Hawaii. I wish!!! Way to go Caleb.

What an awesome experience for Caleb!! Perhaps this will be a springboard for future flying. If I remember correctly, his dad had a huge hankering to be in the Air Force and fly jets but couldn't because of health reasons. Maybe Caleb will choose to do something like this later. It's always great to experience something new and I'm truly impressed with Caleb's determination.
Way to go!!
Funny thing - Amy's mom and college roomate took flying lessons while at BYU and each had their pilot's license. Knowing her mom, that is really quite funny - but somewhere inside it makes sense, I think.
Caleb can come to Utah and go to UVSC's pilot school. It's one of the best in the country. One of my friends in my ward was an instructor there for a while before deciding to fly for Skywest now.
You know Caleb, most of us drive a car before we fly airplanes. What is the world coming to? Since I do not fly I will at least not have to worry about my safety on the road. Those pictures are sooooo cool. I am really jealous.
Grandpa Clark
By the way, this is Caleb using the blog now . . .
Grandpa, first, flying is the most fun I have ever had in my whole life. second while you may be able to pull over in the event of an engine problem, I cant. if I did I would hope I was on the ground. But as far as saftey goes, if I couldnt control the plane, my co- pilot would. So I am safe. and third the would is coming to an end. expecially since I have to go to North West Juinor High. And finally, dont make fun of my spelling Jess. Think about how you spelled as a twelve year old.
Hmm...
The kid's got some attitude. At least I know it is universal and not just aimed at me.
Hey you go caleb!!! Go ahead and tell him off about the spelling!!! Everyone spells something wrong at least fifty times in their life time.
