Fun in the sun

Since we've been here, the ocean current has been from the south (read: warm, sunny Mexico). Today, that changed and the current is now from the north (read: cold, snowy Alaska). The difference in temperature probably wasn't more than a few degrees, but it sure felt a lot colder. That meant I spent less than 2 hours in the water, instead of 3 or 4. I'm lucky to have a wet suit that takes the bite off the temperature and sanding your stomach gets while boogie-boarding; Jen isn't as lucky. She's just tougher.

I also got my most violent wave ride today. The waves in general were very upredictable and generally ornery. I caught a wave that broke right above me and took me all the way to the shore, but not before turning me over a few times, dropping me like my softball team does pop flys, and spitting me out. I still respect the power of the ocean, but it's fun to get a ride every once in a while.

Tonight we went to a Padres-Dodgers game in San Diego. Their park is fairly new (2004) and we sat in left field. I don't care that the Padres win, necessarily, but it sure is nice to see the Dodgers lose (final score: Padres 5, Dodgers 3). Being a Giants fan doesn't leave any room for any admiration of the Dodgers.

We've only got a few days left and I imagine they'll be spent swimming and shopping. It's been good so far.

Are you writing all this to make everyone feel jelous? It's just not fair. I could use some good swimming water right now. You know, Hans and I met swimming in the ocean so we both have a special fondness for it. I'm extremely jelous!!! I'm glad you're having fun though. I will just have to live vicariously thru you I suppose. Drive safe on the way back!

we are all jealous. I'm glad you guys are having fun. Some day Mike and I are going to take our boys to the ocean. All kids need to experience it at some point.

You know, I wondered if people were annoyed with my vacation posts. I'm not trying to rub in the fact that I'm in sunny California on the beach and going to the Zoo and baseball games; rather, I just wanted to create a short log about it. Sorry if you are (for real) jealous and annoyed, but it also provides something for Mike and Adrianne to look forward to, right?

Your boys will love it here someday. Having said that, vacations can be very difficult with kids. I can't imaging hauling around 7 or 8 like Mom and Dad did for years.

I am jealous but not annoyed at all. I think it is cool you get to go.

Every day I get the temperatures and weather in Amsterdam (cold dor summer), Fankfort (seems pretty comfy if you like to keep cool), and Oklahoma City (hot, hot, and more hot). So I guess Adrianne and Mike have a right to be jealose. Wait until winter, then go to San Diego and make them really anoyed.

Actually I got quite used to having lots of kids around. You guys and girls were great, and still are. You just can't get too uptight. I probably am more that way now with the girls than before.

We love you all and are happy that you can have the chances you are getting to go places. I went a lot of places, but it cost a great deal, and kept us poor. We have never really recovered. So what.

I still get the gypsy urge often.

I could not agree more about your baseball sentiments. Anytime the doggers lose it is a good day. I almost like to see the yankees win more than the doggers. It is a close call. A series with them is the only thing that would perhaps justify regular yankee winning.

Family vacations are the stuff memories are made of. Don't forget that (even with crying kids)! Don't you remember all our family camping trips and stopping at every mile marker to read the historical fact along the way? Of course, I am now reading the historical fact markers to my own kids. Funny how that works.
Enjoy the fun in the sun. Wish we could all be there!

Jess and Jen,

It sounds like you guys are having a blast. We love the ocean. Having been in both the Atlantic and Pacific, I can honestly say that I would rather be in the water in Portland, ME than in the SF bay. The Atlantic is much warmer (at least off the US coastline). Although I obviously didn't get a chance (or wanted one for that matter) to be in the water off the coast of New England during my mission, the beaches up there were always packed during the summer. Our children, with the exception of Scott, love the ocean also. Even Alyssa begged to be taken out into the waves when we were in Florida last year. I hope your girls are enjoying the water too.

Unlike Dad, I would much rather see the Dodgers win than the Yanks. The Yankees make me sick. I am especially happy when they get stomped on by my beloved Angels.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation. Keep us informed.
