Discover Mag Fire Article

Jason, I finally got my hands on that article in the Discover Magazine. The main fire they discuss in this article is the Nuttall Complex, which I not only mapped for an emergency assessment, but I also visited. It was a fascinating spot and it really is a sky island. We hiked many miles on that mountain and the picture below is evidence. I didn't think I'd see moss on trees in Arizona in August, when we went. I also saw lots of ferns. The article mentions that every 1,000 foot gain in elevation is like a 500-mile trip north. It's really a cool place. The other pic here is the map I created for the rehab team highlighting the high burn severity locations (seen in red). Unburned pockets within the fire perimeter appear green. I took my data and brought it into Google Earth for better visualization.

Thanks for the info about the article. I find this stuff (wildfire and the lack of wildfire and its impact on an ecosystem) pretty fascinating.

I am glad you got to read that article. I find the sky island idea very interesting - particularly the speciation aspect. If you are interested in more research about fire and respeciation, go to the following website: http://www.nps.gov/yell/publications/pdfs/fire/chapter4.pdf. This is a book chapter by a guy at ISU named Jay Anderson. He spent the last 13 years of his career studying effects of the Yellowstone fire on forest recovery. Unfortunately, Jay had a heart attack and died a few years ago.

This is very cool. I don't know a lot about any of it but I watched a video once in Biology about the fire in yellowstone and how the animals did seem to be adapting after the fire (don't tell dad they had a watch this at BYU). Anyway, I think this is a perfect job for you Jess--but, I've said that before.

Adrianne, I think I watched that same video in the same biology class. I went to the Bean Museum to watch it. I thought it was very interesting...who would have thought I'd be working on fires.

I remember living in Indiana and I was thinking my profession would either be a doctor or forest ranger. I find it funny that I work for the Forest Service now because once I got to college, that was never a thought.

Oh come on now Jess -- we all knew you loved to play around with fire (of any sort!) You little pyro you! Just kidding. You sound like one of the lucky few who enjoy their job. Just don't get any ideas about taking off to some other part of the world chasing a job somewhere else! Everyone is leaving us behind here in Utah!

Those kinds of decisions won't happen until next April at the earliest. That's when you can begin to call me "Master Jess." Nice ring to it, eh? Brent and Jason must enjoy that.

You know Chelsey, it is okay to leave UT. You won't be excommunicated or have your little finger chopped off or anything else of the sort. I think you all need to move to Iowa. Now if I could only get somebody to call me Master.
